My name is Allan S. Hugo. I am an instructor of Computer Applications in Chemical Engineering at the University of Saint La Salle in the Philippines. Last 13 October 1999, I created a mailing list called che-comp with the purpose of sharing my interest in the application of computing technology in chemical engineering. I am very glad to note that a lot of chemical engineering professionals and students are interested. In its six to seven months, che-comp has grown to about 230 members. It is my observation that some members of the lists have created application softwares which they are willing to share with the chemical engineering community but do not have the right venue to distribute them. I have also known some colleagues to be interested in computer programming and in the creation of computer programs for chemical engineering applications. I have heard of CACHE Corporation and have been inspired by its noble goals. It came to my mind, why not create a software foundation to augment/complement what has been started by CACHE. CACHE is a big help. In fact, we are buying softwares from the organization. It is not my intention to compete with CACHE, but rather the foundation will seek to "spread" the tradition that has been pursued by CACHE. This reminds of the relationship between American Institute of Chemical Engineers(AIChE) and the Institution of Chemical Engineers(IChemE) -- same goals, not competing but complementing each other. This lead me to think of setting up Che-Comp Software Foundation. This foundation will foster the creation of quality and affordable chemical engineering softwares for the chemical engineering community worldwide. It will seek sponsorship from generous companies, institutions, and organizations. It will be run by a team of volunteers. It will ask expert advise from the academe and the industry in the creation of its softwares. It will facilitate the distribution of chemical engineering softwares coming from contributors who wish to share their softwares to the chemical engineering community. It will encourage the creation of an "open platform" to establish compatibility of its softwares and that of others. My main concern is how to establish the Che-Comp Software Foundation. Where do we host it? Who will sponsor it?, etc. Any help on this matter will be highly appreciated. A help from CACHE officer will be greatly welcomed. Thank you very much for your kind attention. Sincerely, Allan S. Hugo, Ch.E. Computer Applications in Chemical Engineering http://pages.whowhere.com/computers/consul Need Info? checomp_info@webmailstation.com
