Rawlings and B.A. Ogunnaike, Co-Chairs Subject: Chemical Process Control -- CPC VI Date: 12 November 1998 It is time to start thinking about the next CPC meeting, scheduled for early 2001. We will hold an organizational discussion in Miami Beach Wednesday, November 18 5:00 p.m., Ballroom B, Fontainebleau (after session 227) You may want to browse the CPC VI webpage before the meeting. http://www.che.wisc.edu/cpc-6/ We would like to gather people's input and reactions to several issues. * tentative date: January 7-12, 2001 * location suggestions: winter or summer activities venue choice * format of the meeting: lectures, panels, moderators, tutorials, posters, what mix of which kinds of session formats * specific topics, issues and themes on which to focus this CPC We would like to cast a wide net at this point and hear from as many people as possible regarding issues that should be addressed at CPC VI. We would also be glad to receive email comments from those not able to attend the Miami meeting. During the next year we will select the program committee and start to shape the meeting program. Recall the CPC is held only every five years and plays a unique role among the systems and control meetings we attend. We have listed the general meeting goals below, also listed on the web page. Goals The goals of the CPC conference series are to: 1. Gain an appreciation of the state of process control practice in industries currently or potentially employing and supported by process control engineers and chemical engineers with systems backgrounds. 2. Present tutorial overviews for nonspecialists in each of the important areas of systems and control theory, particularly emerging and new areas. 3. Provide a forum for in-depth discussions between university researchers, industrial practitioners and commercial control technology vendors. 4. Provide practitioners and vendors with a current understanding of the new and significant tools emerging from the research community in order to stimulate wider implementation. 5. Provide a forum for assessing promising research directions for the next decade. Assess needs and challenges in the process industries, as well as evaluate opportunities for increased activity and application in non-traditional industries.
